Policies & Procedures
ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES
To enroll at Blair Magnet School, each student needs the following items:
- valid, legal identification
- proof of age (birth certificate, etc.)
- withdrawal grades from the previous school
- immunization records
- proof of guardianship as applicable
- proof of address - this must be a utility bill or rental contract
WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURES
As per the registrar, a withdrawing student is required to bring a letter signed by the parent/guardian explaining the reason for withdrawal, and stating the name of the new school. Students are then provided with a "Withdrawal Form" by the registrar. This form is then taken to each of the student's teachers who will sign the form. The student must also clear with the library, counselor, and health office using this same form. Books, uniforms, debts, or other reusable supply items are all to be returned prior to completing withdrawal. The completed form is then returned to the registrar who will do the actual withdrawal paperwork and forward the student's records on to the new school.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance at school is the law in the state of California. Students attending school on a regular basis derive the maximum benefit from the instructional program. Students with good attendance records achieve higher grades and are more successful in their pursuit of higher education. Students who are frequently absent from school without sufficient cause may be transferred to an alternative school setting and/or they may be referred to the District Attorney's office for follow up with the parents.
When a student is absent from school for any reason, the parent must call and notify the Attendance Office personnel. A phone call to (626) 441-2201 on the day of absence is preferred. A note signed by the parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence may be sent with the student upon their return. It is to be given to the Attendance Clerk located in the main office. All absences must be cleared within three school days once the student has returned to school.
TARDIES
Excessive tardies will be dealt with first by individual teachers, and then by the deans. The latter will lead to after school detention, suspension, and/or transfer to Rose City Continuation High School
CELL PHONES
Cell phones may be carried in purses or backpacks, etc. but may not be apparent throughout the school day. They are not to be worn on the person, nor ring at any time while on campus. Any transgression of these rules may result in confiscation requiring a parent/guardian to come in to claim the phone from the deans' office.
LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
Blair is a CLOSED CAMPUS. That means that no student may leave the campus without a blue permission slip from the Attendance Office which indicates the reason and time for dismissal. Any student leaving without the permission slip will be considered truant.
Procedure
- Prior to the time you wish to leave, bring in a note signed by the parent/guardian to the Attendance Office. It should state the reason and time to leave school.
- Pick up the blue permission slip at the Attendance Office before leaving.
- Students who become ill during the school day should report to the Health Office. If it is necessary to leave, parental permission will be sought first by Health Office personnel.
EMERGENCY PHONE CALLS
The school wishes to cooperate with students and parents in case of an emergency, however, miscellaneous messages cannot be delivered during the school day. Appointments or other activities after school, should be reviewed with parents outside of school time, as only in the case of a true emergency will the school try to deliver personal messages.
NOTICE OF SEARCH POLICY
Along with delivering a quality education, the safety and security of students, employees, and visitors to our school is a high priority with the Board of Education. Therefore, the school district has adopted a Student Search Policy. In order to assure that the campuses are free of guns, knives, and other weapons, drugs, and any contraband items, the school is allowed to conduct random searches of students, their bags, backpacks, P.E. locker, school locker, and automobile.
RANDOM SEARCH WITH METAL DETECTORS
Blair Magnet School uses hand-held metal detectors to conduct random searches at school and at school events during and after school hours. These searches will be conducted regularly and randomly throughout the school year. The purpose of the searches is to deter students from bringing weapons to school , such as knives, guns, or any other items which might cause harm or injury. Students are asked to cooperate with the random search program. Failure to cooperate will result in suspension from school.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Pasadena Unified School District policy prohibits sexual harassment from occurring among its employees and/or students, and will make efforts to prevent it from happening by advising its employees and/or students, of its prohibitions, handbooks, and conversations.
BUS PASSES
Any student residing in the Pasadena Unified School District is eligible for a free MTA bus pass card if they are enrolled at their assigned school and live at least 2.5 miles away. Free stickers are issued by the Student Body Bookkeeper at the end of each school month for the ensuing month. Students attending Blair on a permit from another city are responsible for their own transportation. There are no temporary passes. Lost or stolen passes can be replaced following a specific procedure.
BUS BEHAVIOR
While riding the busses, students are required to follow the directions of the driver and avoid all loud or boisterous conduct. Students must refrain from eating, "tagging", or carrying any dangerous implements. Failure to obey these rules may cause the temporary or permanent revocation of riding privileges.
HEALTH OFFICE
A nurse is in the Health Office located on the first floor of the "A" building throughout the school day. If you have a health problem, require first aid, or become ill at school, report to the nurse. Any student who is injured or taken ill during the school day must report to the nurse before leaving campus.
Procedure:
- Report to class
- Get a pass from your teacher to see the nurse.
- Bring a pass signed by your teacher to the Health Office.
Do not come to school if you have a cold or a fever. Do not report to the Health Office between classes unless it is an emergency. You will not be given medicine of any kind (including aspirin). You will however be given first aid and guidance in health matters.
Those students who must take prescription medicine during the course of the school day should check with the nurse and follow the procedures outlined by the nurse. A doctor's note is mandatory.
UNIFORM DRESS CODE
The uniform dress code at Blair is a green, yellow, black or white top and khaki bottom. Outer wear may only be green, yellow, white, khaki, grey, or black. This applies to both boys and girls in the middle and upper schools. "Blair Wear" may also be worn. If wearing pants, shorts or skirts, all shirts must be tucked in.
P.E./GYM UNIFORMS
Students taking physical education classes are obligated to wear a designated gym uniform. The uniform consists of solid green shorts, plain white t-shirt, plain white socks, and sneakers when participating in any gym class. For cooler, or inclement weather, solid color black sweatshirts and sweatpants are permissible. In addition, complete gym attire, printed with the Blair logo may be purchased at the Student Store on "A" campus. No other logos are allowed. Failure to be appropriately dressed for class will result in a "suit cut". Suit , or gym wear cuts, affect one's grades.
LOCKERS
Gym lockers are assigned by the Athletic Department staff. Students must provide their own combination or keyed locks.
Hall lockers are issued by the Deans' office. Use of lockers is voluntary. Students wishing to use a school locker must purchase a school lock from the Student Store for $5.00. Personal locks will be removed.

A.S.B. CARDS
A Viking's student body card is the passport to the whole activity program at Blair, and we encourage you to purchase one. At $25, the A.S.B. card provides a real bargain in fun, entertainment, and social activity. The A.S.B. card can save you a lot of money by providing free admission to all Rio Hondo League games in which Blair participates, and providing discounts to dances, and other school activities. Your A.S.B. money pays for the total activities program of the school. A card can be obtained at registration, or from the Student Body Bookkeeper throughout the year. If you lose your card, you must pay a $5 fee for a duplicate. If you loan your A.S.B. card to another person, it will be taken away, and another one will cost the original price.
I.D. CARDS
All students will be provided with a numbered student identification card at the beginning of the school year. Please remember that you are required to carry a picture I.D. card with you at all times, whether an A.S.B. card or your Student I.D. card. A replacement card costs $5.00 and is available in the Activity Office.
